What should I do if water gets into the engine?

Recently, heavy rainfall has been occurring across various regions. During this time, what should you do if your engine has taken on water? Chongqing Yuma Mechatronics is here to guide you.
Important Reminder
Under normal circumstances, do not operate the engine in the rain. If you notice water entering the engine or suspect it has, immediately turn off the engine and cut off the fuel supply. Absolutely do not attempt to restart the engine until it has been thoroughly cleaned and dried!
When heavy rain strikes and your engine is still running outdoors, you’ll next need to assess how badly your engine has been flooded.
Observation Air filter Whether it’s thoroughly soaked or visibly waterlogged.
Check the dipstick—after pulling it out, observe whether the oil appears milky white or coffee-colored (indicating oil emulsification), or if the oil level has risen abnormally high (since water is denser than oil and settles at the bottom of the oil pan, it can push the oil level upward).
Check the spark plug holes and exhaust pipe openings for any visible water marks.
Observe the exterior of the engine for any water-damage mark lines.
Surface gets rained on
Typically, engines undergo rain tests during the development phase to ensure they can operate reliably under a certain level of rainfall. If your engine is only expected to function in light rain conditions, rainwater generally won't enter the engine's interior. In such cases, you’ll need to perform the following steps:
Thoroughly wipe dry or blow dry all visible water droplets on the exterior of the engine using a dry cloth or compressed air (at low pressure), paying special attention to cleaning components such as the starter motor, ignition coil, wiring harness, and control panel.
The air filter element, which is only slightly damp but not fully soaked or contaminated with mud and water, can be used after being air-dried in the shade (avoid direct sunlight or baking at all costs). If the filter is thoroughly wetted, deformed, or contaminated with mud and water, it must be replaced, and the inner wall of the filter housing should be cleaned.
If the muffler exhaust pipe has no water or only a small amount of water, no action is required. However, if there’s excessive water, you’ll need to remove the muffler to clear out the accumulated water.
The engine oil is normal in color and free of emulsification; treat as if no water has entered. However, if water droplets are found on the oil dipstick, assume a small amount of water has entered and proceed with an oil change.
A small amount of water enters
Criteria for determining minor water ingress: The air filter is visibly soaked or water marks are clearly visible; the engine oil turns milky white, or the oil level rises unexpectedly.
Handling method:
Replace the air filter element and clean the inner wall of the filter housing.
Drain the remaining oil, add sufficient new oil that meets the specified standards, and replace the oil filter with a new one!
Remove the spark plug and check whether it’s dry or wet.
Using a wrench of the appropriate size, slowly and gently turn the crankshaft by hand (typically rotating the flywheel nut) to allow any accumulated water in the cylinder to drain out through the spark plug holes.
Thoroughly dry damp electrical components by blowing them dry with compressed air.
The engine was submerged.
When excessive rainfall causes the engine to be partially or fully submerged in water, self-rescue becomes extremely difficult and can easily lead to permanent damage. In such cases, it’s generally necessary to completely disassemble and inspect the engine; therefore, we recommend seeking assistance from professional repair technicians.
This situation generally requires the following steps:
The engine was completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned (including the crankcase, oil passages, cylinder block, cylinder head, and piston-connecting rod assembly).
Inspect all moving parts (crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, camshaft, bearings, and bearing shells) for wear, deformation, and rust.
Inspect the cylinder walls, valves, and valve seats for damage.
Thoroughly clean or replace all components of the fuel system (fuel tank, fuel pump, filter, fuel lines, injectors/carburetor).
All seals (oil seals, gaskets) must be replaced.
Comprehensive inspection, cleaning, drying, or replacement of the electrical system components—including the starter motor, generator, ECU/ignition module, sensors, and wiring harness.
Replace all filters (air filter, oil filter, fuel filter).
Reassemble, then add new oil, coolant, and fuel.
Engine water ingress isn’t as serious as you might think—proper and timely handling is key. If your engine is in the first scenario, you can easily handle it yourself. However, the second scenario requires some specialized knowledge, so it’s best to proceed cautiously. And if you encounter the second or third scenarios, we recommend seeking assistance from a professional technician.
